Diplomatic Corps Corroborates Transparency of Cuban Elections
Havana, Oct 21 (acn) The transparency of Cuban Municipal Elections was corroborated on Sunday by members of the diplomatic community based on the island. During a visit to a local voting station in the Havana municipality of Centro Habana, Ethiopian ambassador to Havana Berhanu Dibaba described the vote as transparent and organized, with strict control of procedures, in an election where Cuban citizens vote for their representatives democratically,not like it usually happens in other countries.>>Details>>

Ethiopian rebels claim killing 250 government troops

Ethiopian rebels said they had killed 250 government troops in on renewed clashes in the volatile Ogaden region, where the government has been carrying our a crackdown. Female journalists from Iraq, Mexico and Ethiopia win awards

Six Iraqi women who risked their lives working for an American news organization, a Mexican reporter who faced death threats for her reporting on pedophiles, and an Ethiopian journalist charged with treason for criticizing the government received awards for courage Tuesday. At a luncheon attended by some 500 people, the International Women's Media Foundation honored the six Iraqis who worked in the McClatchy Baghdad bureau, Mexican correspondent Lydia Cacho who travels with four bodyguards because of threats on her life for her reporting, and Ethiopian reporter and former publisher Serkalem Fasil who was released from prison in April after facing a possible death sentence for treason. >>Details>>

Abay Tsehaye Forced to Evacuate

The Ethiopian leader did not directly address claims by the Ogaden National Liberation Force that they have humiliated government troops in two separate incidents in the eastern region close to the border with Somalia. In a message e-mailed to journalists Sunday from London, the ONLF said it had ambushed government troops near the town of Warder, about 700 kilometers east of Addis Ababa. The message said 140 soldiers had been killed, forcing the emergency evacuation of Abay Tsehaye, a senior aide to the prime minister who was visiting the region. A follow-up e-mail received Tuesday, said a second day of battles had boosted government losses to 250. >>Details>>

Ethiopia Faces New Millennium, Uncertain of Future

As Ethiopia ushers in a new millennium according to its unique calendar, many Ethiopians are concerned about the direction the country is taking. Opposition politicians claim they are denied freedom of expression, and aid workers raise concerns about instability and human rights. Cathy Majtenyi recently visited Ethiopia and files this report for VOA. Prime Minister Meles Zenawi and his government are under fire for elections held two years ago. During and after election time, government forces arrested and jailed thousands of opposition supporters, journalists, activists and others. Hailu Shawel is chairman of the country's main opposition party, the Coalition for Unity and Democracy, or CUD. Hailu's colleagues celebrated the new millennium in the United States to protest what they say is a serious lack of democracy in Ethiopia.>>Details>>

November 27, 2007 — The real prospect of HR 2003 (Ethiopia Democracy and Accountability Act of 2007) becoming a US law is making the Ethiopian ruling party very nervous. Consistent with the nature of an oligarchic regime, it perceives democracy as a threat to its very existence. Thus, its multiple approaches, at home and abroad, to try to quash HR 2003 in the US Senate should come as no surprise to anyone.

In Ethiopia, Seyoum Mesfin, Minister of Foreign Affairs, is attempting to appeal to the nationalistic sentiment ofthe society by portraying the bill as the United States Congress’s attempt to “neo-colonize” Ethiopia. Such a desperate and reckless allegation by a high-level party official might have potentially ignited an anti-American sentiment throughout the country. However, thanks to the ruling party’s immense unpopularity, the Minister’s political demagoguery will have little or no impact. Such twisted allegations by a high-ranking official of the ruling party show the extent of their willingness to alienate Ethiopian society against the U.S. government to preserve the ruling party’s own power
